The National Maritime Authority recorded 22 deaths on Portuguese beaches during the four months of the bathing season, between May 1 and August 31. The report also mentions 1,285 rescues and 2,359 first aid actions during this period. In the month of August, four cases involving fatalities were recorded, of which three were caused by sudden illness. Of the 22 deaths recorded throughout the entire bathing season, 12 occurred due to drowning, with three of these fatalities occurring on monitored ocean beaches.
