The European Union should approve a new mission in Lebanon in the month of October, as announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
According to the High Representative, the objective of this mission is not to replace the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known by the acronym UNIFIL.
UNIFIL's mandate, which is the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, is scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
The European mission thus comes in a context in which the end of the UN force's mandate is approaching, although it does not intend to take its place in Lebanese territory.
