Government says Brussels supports public participation in REN for "greater security"

CNN Portugal1 September 2026 at 19:49

The Portuguese Government announced that the European Commission supports public participation in REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais), considering that this measure brings greater security. This position from Brussels comes in the context of a strategy to strengthen the State's presence in the energy sector.

The Executive has not yet revealed details about the final price of the acquisition operation of the 13.7% of REN. This lack of information about the concrete cost of the transaction has been pointed out as one of the main gaps in the Government's communication about the process.

The financing mechanisms for the acquisition have also not been explained in concrete terms by the Executive. It is not yet known how the State intends to finance this operation nor what sources of resources will be used.

Furthermore, the Government did not specify how the 13.7% will be used to influence REN's strategy. Thus, it remains unclear what the effective impact of this public participation will be on the company's decisions and the future direction of the national energy infrastructure.
