The German government announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, after accusing Russia of responsibility for the drone incidents at Leipzig airport in August. The Russian General Consulate in Bonn will be closed on September 18 and the contract of the Russian House in Berlin will be terminated.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the measures after Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt held Moscow responsible for the "hybrid attack" with an explosives-laden drone in early August at Leipzig airport, a key infrastructure for the German army, NATO and logistical support to Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova guaranteed that Moscow would give an "appropriate response" to the German measures, stating that Berlin "aggravated relations with Moscow under a totally implausible and forced pretext." Russia considers that there is no evidence of its involvement in the incident.
The German Chancellor had already announced on Sunday that the investigations would be concluded shortly and that Berlin would react together with the European Union and NATO.
