More than a month after the massive entry of migrants in Ceuta, the Spanish Government begins to define the causes of the crisis. The main conclusion is that the migratory pressure, with around 72,000 entries between July 30 and 31, would have been caused by the spread of false news through social media.
According to the Executive, a recent ruling by the Supreme Court on the so-called hot returns would have led to the belief that it would be legally impossible to expel those who entered by swimming. This disinformation would have been the trigger for the migratory wave.
The Spanish authorities classify the incident as "hybrid attacks" linked to the manipulation of algorithms on digital platforms. The phenomenon would have been studied together with the European Commission.
The investigation is still ongoing, but the Government guarantees it is working with Brussels to continue identifying and closing the accounts that would have contributed to the spread of the hoaxes.
