The Portuguese Navy, through the Funchal Maritime Rescue Coordination Sub-Centre (MRSC Funchal), coordinated on Tuesday a medical rescue operation of a 65-year-old man, of Swiss nationality.

The rescue took place on board the sailing yacht "Metanoia 2", flying a Swiss flag, which was sailing approximately 159 nautical miles, about 294 kilometres, northwest of Madeira Island.

The alert was received by MRSC Funchal, which was informed about the need for medical assistance by a crew member of the vessel. The press release does not specify what the medical situation was that prompted the rescue request.
