José María Giménez will not be a Benfica player. The Uruguayan centre-back is not among the objectives of the red-and-white club, and there has never been any negotiation between the eagles and Atlético de Madrid for the player. The information was confirmed by transfer specialist Matteo Moretto.
The 31-year-old Uruguayan international will represent Deportivo da Corunha. The Spanish club, a historic name in local football and newly promoted to La Liga, is finalising the signing of the defender, with the clubs exchanging documentation to conclude the deal.
One of the main obstacles to a possible transfer to Benfica was related to the player's contractual situation. Giménez has a contract with Atlético de Madrid until 2028 and earns a salary considered too high for the financial reality of the Portuguese club.
Given these conditions, Benfica never considered moving for the South American defender. Despite the rumours placing the player on the red-and-white radar, there was no movement from the Portuguese club.
