The story of Priscila de Melo, 42, and her son Adriano Álvaro Melo, known as Alvinho, 10, moved readers after being published by GLOBO. Mother and son lost their home and have been living in shelters since the beginning of the year, after the mother's diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis.
The solidarity generated by the publication created a support network around the family. People continue to make donations and promise to help the boy with his studies and rent payment, allowing the two to start dreaming of better days.
The family's most immediate plan is to return to Cabo Frio, in the Lakes Region. Alvinho had been enrolled at the beginning of the year in a private school in the city after obtaining a full scholarship, which he lost when his mother had to return to Rio to treat the disease at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation.
The scholarship had been obtained through the direction of a care facility, which can now help the family again. With community support, Priscila and Alvinho see the possibility of rebuilding their lives and ensuring the boy resumes his studies.
