Adriano Álvaro Melo, known as Alvinho, 10 years old, and his mother Priscila de Melo, 42, lost their home at the beginning of the year and have been living in shelters ever since. Their story was revealed by GLOBO, moving thousands of people who formed a solidarity network around the family.
Priscila was diagnosed with drug-resistant tuberculosis and needed to return to Rio to undergo treatment at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. It was during this period that Alvinho lost the full scholarship he had obtained at a private school in Cabo Frio, in the Lagos Region, where he had been enrolled since the beginning of the year.
The solidarity network that formed after the case was reported caused donations to keep coming in. In addition to material contributions, there are promises of help so the boy can resume his studies and also for the family's rent payment.
The most immediate plan for mother and son is to return to Cabo Frio. With the support of people who are moved by their situation, Priscila and Alvinho are beginning to dream of better days and make plans for the future in the city where they intend to rebuild their lives.
