The General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) confirmed the presence of Newcastle disease in wild birds on four islands of the Azores – São Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa and Pico – after records of abnormal mortality since the beginning of July, with 17 positive results out of 134 analyses carried out. The affected species are the rock pigeon and the collared dove, and although similar symptoms have been observed on Faial and Santa Maria, there is no laboratory confirmation on these islands yet. DGAV recommended prevention measures such as updated vaccination, reinforced cleaning of facilities and protecting food and water from contact with wild birds.
