The Descida do Rio Sado, organized by the Municipality of Setúbal, departs from the Moinho de Maré da Mourisca (Mourisca Tidal Mill) and arrives at the Parque Urbano de Albarquel, on a course of approximately 25 kilometres that combines sporting practice with contact with the natural landscape of the estuary. The route may be altered depending on sea and wind conditions.
This year's edition has around a hundred participants, with canoeing recording the highest attendance with 55 registered in kayak. Stand up paddle brings together 32 participants, a number the organization expects to reach 40 boards. Participation is mainly individual, although some registered participants are from regional clubs.
The activity is open to paddle and oar-powered vessels, including kayaks, Hawaiian canoe, rowing and stand up paddle, aimed at nautical tourists and federated athletes. The Municipality, through the Náutico Centre with support from the Clube de Canoagem de Setúbal, provides kayaks, life jackets and paddles to participants who request this support.
The program begins at 08:30 at the Parque Urbano de Albarquel for those requiring transport, with gathering at Mourisca at 09:30 and departure at 10:30. Along the route, three stops are planned for rest and refreshments, and security is ensured by three support vessels and a larger boat. The arrival of the last participants at Albarquel is expected at 17:30.
