José Carlos Pinto achieved the gold medal in the 5,000 meters at the Mediterranean Games held in Taranto. The Portuguese athlete completed the race with a time of 14 minutes, 41 seconds and 11 hundredths.

The victory was decided in an intense sprint, with the Portuguese overtaking his opponents by just four tenths of a second, thus securing the Mediterranean title in the long-distance discipline.
