The Mexican government confirmed on Tuesday the killing of Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, known as 'El Güicho' or 'R5', leader of the Los Reyes cartel. Barragán Chávez was considered one of the main responsible for extorting avocado producers in the state of Michoacán, and the United States offered a reward of three million dollars for information leading to his capture.
The killing was announced by the secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, through social media. The operation was carried out in the municipality of Tocumbo, located in western Mexico, where the suspects allegedly assaulted the federal forces agents before being killed.
In addition to Barragán Chávez, another presumed member of the criminal group also died during the confrontation. With this operation, Mexican authorities eliminate one of the leaders of the Los Reyes cartel, an organization mainly dedicated to extorting avocado producers in the Michoacán region.
