Quercus contests felling of 14,000 cork oaks to expand Industrial Park in Covilhã

Quercus is contesting the proposal to fell approximately 14,000 cork oaks, many of them centuries old, for the expansion of the Tortosendo Industrial Park in Covilhã. The environmental organization accuses the City Council of not having studied alternatives and considers that the existence of the grove should require a review of the land classification. The revision of the Municipal Master Plan is under public discussion until September 4. Quercus argues that the need for expansion is not demonstrated, pointing out that there are already urbanized industrial plots that remain unused, and appeals to ICNF and CCDR-Centro not to authorize destruction without proof that no viable alternatives exist.
