The association Acreditar made an appeal during Golden September, the international awareness month for pediatric cancer, asking that parents not be forced to choose between being with their sick child and working. The association argues that a child with cancer needs the presence and support of both parents during treatment.
Acreditar alerts to the need for support for families of children with oncological diseases, noting that the assistance allowance for children with oncological disease has been increased from 65% to 100% of the reference remuneration. However, this possibility of enhanced support remains unimplemented in practice.
The assistance allowance for children with oncological disease allows one of the parents to be absent from work to care for their child during treatment. The association considers it essential that parents can be present with the child without having to choose between their professional situation and accompanying their sick child.
