Viana do Castelo is facing significant problems in waste management and road infrastructure, according to reports from a Municipal Council meeting. ERSAR data places the municipality below the national average in several waste collection indicators, while residents reported roads with potholes and lighting failures, particularly in Darque and Estrada da Papanata.
Opposition councilor André Lousinha, from AD, defended the need for more vehicles and workers for waste collection, a greater focus on door-to-door collection, and more frequent washing of containers. Councilor Carlota Borges responded by announcing a fleet expansion next year and revealed that more than 50 locations have been identified for new ecopoints. Luís Nobre played down the ERSAR data, arguing that it is not appropriate to directly compare municipalities with different characteristics.
Regarding the road network, the Mayor guaranteed that the council is aware of the reported problems in Darque and announced the requalification of several streets, as part of an investment exceeding 21 million euros. In response to alerts about Estrada da Papanata, he also revealed a new four to five kilometre section between the A28 exit and EN13, through the back area of Santa Luzia, with the aim of removing traffic from the city centre.
