Businessman Diogo Freitas, from Ponte de Lima and owner of the company Officetotal Food Brands, launched a social media appeal for the construction of a statue in honor of Fernando Pimenta. This appeal arose after the athlete won two more gold medals during the past weekend at the World Canoeing Championships.
In the publication, the businessman highlighted that Fernando Pimenta became the most decorated athlete ever in the K1 1000 and K1 5000 meters distances at World Championships. Freitas expressed his business group's willingness to fully cover the cost of the artwork, only requesting that the City Council provide an appropriate location for its installation.
Rosa Pimenta, the athlete's mother, also reacted on social media to the businessman's appeal, thanking the gesture and stating that "there are still good and rare people in Ponte de Lima who recognize Fernando Pimenta's value."
