War and inflation take their toll: State expects to pay an additional 776 million in debt interest in 2027

The Portuguese Ministry of Finance expects public debt interest costs to increase by approximately 776 million euros in 2027, totaling more than seven billion euros in interest alone. This increase is due to the monetary tightening by central banks to control inflation, intensified by geopolitical conflicts including the war in Ukraine and tensions in Iran. The interest bill is expected to rise from 6 billion in 2025 to 6.3 billion this year and then to more than 7 billion in 2027, an amount equivalent to the planned increase in pension expenditure. Public debt reached 93% of GDP in June, and the Prime Minister reaffirmed the target to reduce it to 87.5% by year-end.
