The burst of a water main on Rei Pelé Avenue, in Maracanã, in Rio's North Zone, caused a large leak during the early morning that flooded the street. Águas do Rio technicians controlled the leak around 4 AM, but mud and a crater remain in the sidewalk, at the height of Gate 02 of the Maracanã stadium.
Due to the incident, it was necessary to temporarily suspend water supply in regions of the North and South zones of the capital. In the North Zone, all neighborhoods of Grande Tijuca were affected, as well as Engenho Novo, Sampaio, and Lins. In the South Zone, the impacted neighborhoods include Botafogo, Copacabana, Leme, Urca, Laranjeiras, Cosme Velho, and Santa Teresa.
Water supply will be restored gradually after the repair work is completed, which may take 72 hours or more, especially in elevated areas and at the ends of the distribution networks. The utility company Águas do Rio advises the population to conserve water and postpone tasks that require large amounts of water until service is normalized.
