António José Seguro promulgates the Foreigners and Asylum Granting Law

ZAP Notícias1 September 2026 at 11:00

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, promulgated this Monday the so-called "Law on Foreigners and Asylum Granting", after the Constitutional Court decided on Friday not to rule on the unconstitutionality of the 11 norms that had been submitted to preventive monitoring.

The law modifies the reception regimes for foreigners or stateless persons, of entry, stay, exit and removal of foreigners from the national territory and of granting asylum.

The President of the Republic defended that "reforms in these matters are desirable", as long as they are carried out "with legal certainty and respecting the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and current international instruments".
