The "tatuzinho" technology, a reduced version of the famous "tatuzão" used in subway works, will now be applied in sanitation projects in Baixada Fluminense. Starting in September, the equipment will begin installing sewage collectors in Duque de Caxias, opening underground paths for 9.8 km of pipelines without the need to open large trenches in the city's streets.
The operation represents an investment of R$ 300 million in the municipality of Duque de Caxias. With this intervention, 29 million liters of sewage per day will be prevented from being dumped into Rio Farias, one of the main rivers in the region, a volume equivalent to 11 Olympic swimming pools. This amount will add to the 134 million liters that currently already stop polluting Guanabara Bay daily.
The project aims to reinforce the protection belt around Guanabara Bay, an ecosystem in recovery. After Duque de Caxias, the municipality of Nilópolis will be the next to receive the works with the "tatuzinho" technology, still at the end of this month.
The technology is already in use in other regions around the bay, including the construction of sanitary sewage systems in the Maré favela complex and in São Gonçalo, demonstrating the expansion of this solution to various areas of the metropolitan region.
