MPRJ conducts operation against group that controlled the exploitation of canteens in Rio prisons; estimated damage is over R$ 25 million

The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, through GAECO, launched this Tuesday an operation against a criminal organization known as the "canteen mafia," which exploited the canteens installed in state prisons. The group maintained a scheme for almost ten years to eliminate competition in the tenders destined for the administration of the spaces and counted on the alliance of public agents, including an Undersecretary. The estimated damage to public coffers exceeds R$ 25 million. The State Secretariat of Prison Police informed that the canteen activities in the prisons were terminated in 2024.
