Deer can be culled after destruction of chestnut trees in village in Bragança

SIC Notícias1 September 2026 at 12:09

Chestnut producers in the village of Cova de Lua, in the municipality of Bragança, suffered significant losses due to the destruction of chestnut trees caused by deer. The communal lands commission of the region held the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests responsible for the damage caused to local production. After protests and calls for intervention, permission was granted for the possible culling of deer in the area. This situation arises in the context of a conflict between hunting activity and chestnut production in this Trás-os-Montes village.

Is the Diário changing for its 150 years?

The Diário de Notícias da Madeira newspaper and TSF-Madeira announce a restructuring weeks before completing 150 years, with the appointment of Rúben Santos as Editor-in-Chief, who also takes on the joint multimedia coordination of both outlets. Roberto Ferreira, João Filipe Pestana, and Ricardo Duarte Freitas leave executive management positions to become Senior Writers, in a reorganization that aims to flatten hierarchies, integrate operations between print, digital, and radio, and strengthen investigative work. However, the article criticizes that the changes are superficial, arguing that ownership by oligarchs and government subsidies limit editorial independence, and that real transformation would only be possible with a change in the political regime.
