The annual inflation rate in the eurozone accelerated 1.3 percentage points in August, compared to the same month in 2025, to 3.3%, mainly due to energy prices, with Portugal registering 3.6%, above the average. According to data published by Eurostat, inflation in the eurozone was at 2.0% in August 2025 and rose to 3.3% a year later, representing an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to July of this year.
The main pressure on prices came from energy, whose inflation rate accelerated to 14.3% in August, against 10.3% in July, after registering a negative year-on-year variation of 2.0% in August 2025. Services followed with 3.0% and non-energy industrial goods with 1.2%. In food, alcohol and tobacco, inflation remained at 1.2%, well below the 3.2% observed in August last year.
In Portugal, the year-on-year inflation rate accelerated to 3.6% in August, after remaining at 3.1% between May and July, standing 0.3 percentage points above the eurozone average. This increase represents a rise of 1.1 percentage points compared to August 2025, when year-on-year inflation was 2.5%, a growth slightly lower than that recorded in the euro area, which was 1.3 percentage points. The data released by Eurostat is still a preliminary estimate.
