The drug evolocumab shows a 20% reduction in mortality risk in high-risk patients with no history of heart attack or stroke

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General1 September 2026 at 11:19

Biotech company Amgen presented new results from a clinical study demonstrating the benefits of the drug evolocumab, marketed as Repatha, in high-risk cardiovascular patients. The medication, added to statins or other lipid-lowering treatments, proved effective in reducing LDL cholesterol, known as "bad cholesterol."

The study involved more than 12,000 high-risk patients without prior history of heart attack or ischemic stroke. The results indicated that evolocumab achieved a 20% reduction in mortality risk in these patients when compared to standard treatment alone.

These data represent a significant advance in cardiovascular prevention treatment, offering a new therapeutic option for patients who have not experienced previous cardiovascular events but who present high risk of developing them.
