The environmental association ZERO warned about a worsening of water quality at Portuguese beaches, with a significant increase in advisories and bathing bans this year. This conclusion results from an analysis carried out by the association itself on the conditions of bathing waters in the country.
Microbiological contaminations continue to be identified as the main cause of problems detected in Portuguese bathing waters. This situation has led to the need to close several beaches to the public during the bathing season.
The increase in bans represents a concern for swimmers and for the tourism sector, which depends heavily on the quality of Portuguese beaches during the summer months.
