Niterói emitted 1,241,275 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in 2024, according to the municipality's first Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory, released by the city government. The survey will be used as the basis for developing public policies to reduce emissions and for climate change adaptation strategies.
The transport sector was responsible for 63% of emissions, followed by waste, with 31%. In addition to these two sectors, the inventory also considered emissions related to stationary energy.
The inventory was developed on the Data Portal for Cities (DPFC) platform, which uses the Common Reporting Framework (CRF), a methodology of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy to account for greenhouse gas emissions in cities.
