Laryngeal cancer kills fewer and fewer men in Spain, but is increasing among women over 55 years old

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General1 September 2026 at 09:10

Laryngeal cancer mortality has decreased significantly in Spain in recent decades, especially among men. A study published in Acta Otorrinolaringológica Española analyzed national mortality trends between 1999 and 2023. The age-standardized mortality rate in men fell from 12.10 to 4.76 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a reduction of more than 60%. In women, mortality remained globally stable, but with different behavior according to age group. While it decreases among younger women, there is a significant increase in laryngeal cancer mortality from age 55 onwards.
