Santa Teresa Tram: at 130 years old, the mode faces conflict between tourist ride and neighborhood transportation

130 years ago, on September 1st, animal traction was replaced by electric energy in the Santa Teresa tram system in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, the tram has been running as it is known today, becoming a symbol of the neighborhood and a postcard of the city. The mode played an active role in the urban development of the region, but faced periods of abandonment over the decades.

After more than 50 years of interruption, the Santa Teresa tram underwent a reinauguration in June, restoring the 5.8 kilometers between the Dois Irmãos and Silvestre stations. The expectation now is that a new section will allow the connection of the system with the Corcovado Train, facilitating access to Christ the Redeemer.

The integration between Silvestre and the Corcovado Train existed until the 1960s, but was closed to the public after the major storms that caused destruction in the region in 1966. The resumption of this route represents another step in the historical recovery of this mode that has resisted time and continues to attract attention wherever it goes.

"Life has not been easy at all": Carla was a single mother, went back to work at 78 and at 101 she remains "passionate" about fashion

Carla Villa, an Italian woman of 101 about to turn 102, shared her life story marked by challenges and overcoming. She was a single mother in 1967, at a time of strong social prejudices, and raised her son Thomas alone with the support of her family. She lost her brother Aldo in World War II, in the battle of the Don, in Russia. At the age of 78, she went back to work in the same space in Milan where she had previously managed an antique shop for 18 years, temporarily replacing an employee in a bridal dress shop. At 101 years old, she maintains an interest in fashion, having previously designed her own dresses, and continues to live in the same family home on Via San Marco for the past 99 years. The article also addresses Portuguese rules on the accumulation of old-age pension with work income.
