Floods that hit Nepal and China have caused more than 1,000 dead, according to local authorities. The death toll continues to rise as rescue operations continue, with thousands of people still missing.

The natural catastrophe affects both nations simultaneously, overwhelming emergency services and humanitarian response capacities. The authorities of both countries have declared a state of emergency and mobilized resources to the most affected areas.

The floods were caused by intense torrential rains that have plagued the region in recent weeks. The effects of the floods include destruction of homes, infrastructure and agricultural land in vast areas.
