A law firm is preparing a class action lawsuit against EMEL, Lisbon's municipal parking company, which is expected to be filed in court in early September. The action comes after compiling hundreds of complaints from motorists who feel their rights have been violated.
The lawyers accuse EMEL of ignoring drivers' defense rights, operating outside regulatory hours, and charging allegedly expired fines. These practices are said to have resulted in millions of euros collected improperly from motorists.
EMEL rejects all accusations of illegality and guarantees that it has the authority to operate throughout the municipality of Lisbon. The municipal company maintains that its actions are within the law.
The lawsuit could pave the way for the refund of millions of euros in fines to affected motorists, should the court rule in favor of the plaintiffs.
