Trump asks Apple to change name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on its maps

Correio da Manhã1 September 2026 at 00:56

United States President Donald Trump asked Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on its digital maps. The Republican signed an executive order last week regarding this body of water, which is now at the center of an escalation in the trade war with Canada. The question of the lake's name has thus become a new point of tension between the two countries.

The executive order signed by Trump comes at a time of intensification of tariffs imposed by the US government on Canada. The lake, which is shared between the United States and Canada, is now officially designated as "Lake America" in US executive documentation, in a decision that provoked adverse reactions from the Canadian side.

The requirement that Apple change the name on its map services represents an additional step in Trump's attempt to assert the American designation for the lake. This situation arises after Trudeau indicated that Canada could retaliate against the US, potentially considering the possibility of cutting off electricity supply to American communities that depend on water from the Great Lakes.
