The Economist compares Renan Santos to Milei and highlights presidential candidacy: 'not a charlatan'

cbn1 September 2026 at 00:37

The British magazine The Economist published a report on Monday (31st) classifying Brazilian Renan Santos, candidate of the Missão party for the presidency, as an "outsider" in the Brazilian election. The publication draws parallels between the politician and Argentine President Javier Milei, highlighting his economic proposals, positions on security, and social media presence.

Renan Santos is described as a political outsider who gained notoriety by organizing demonstrations against the Dilma Rousseff government. He founded the Free Brazil Movement (MBL) in 2014 and currently leads Missão, a party created by the group and registered in 2025.

According to The Economist, although he maintains defense of free markets, Renan Santos has moved away from more radical liberalism. On security, his agenda is tougher, with admiration for the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, and proposals to harden the fight against criminal organizations.

The magazine states that there is space for him on the right of the Brazilian political spectrum, positioning him as an alternative to traditional candidates.
