The European Union determined the suspension starting Thursday (3) of the import of beef and poultry from Brazil. The measure also covers Brazilian eggs and honey.
According to the European Commission, Brazil did not offer sufficient guarantees that its products meet European standards that restrict the inappropriate use of antibiotics in livestock.
A spokesperson for the European Executive told AFP that Brazil is an important partner of the EU and that they are working closely, in a constructive and positive manner, with Brazilian authorities to ensure compliance with the requirements. Once this compliance is demonstrated, exports may be resumed.
Brussels did not provide a forecast for the resumption of purchases. In the case of poultry meat and honey, an audit by European authorities is underway and is expected to be completed on Friday.
