The news comes days after the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that the United States threatened to oppose British sovereignty over the Falklands, also known as the Falklands in the English-speaking world, if the United Kingdom did not increase spending in the Defense sector.
The threat is reportedly related to the United Kingdom's refusal, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, to meet the NATO-recommended defense investment target of 2% of Gross Domestic Product.
The Falklands were the subject of a war between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982, resulting in British victory and the maintenance of London's sovereignty over the territory, which remains contested by Buenos Aires.
