The General Directorate for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP) decided to ban the entry of food supplements such as creatine and proteins in Portuguese prisons. The measure covers all prison establishments in the country.
The ban is due to the fact that prison services consider it difficult to visually distinguish these supplements from other illicit substances. DGRSP argues that there is a risk that these products may be used as a means of confusion with drugs.
In addition, prison authorities point to the risk of these supplements being used as an instrument of extortion and coercion among inmates, creating dynamics of violence inside prisons.
The decision specifically applies to muscle growth supplements, including creatine and protein supplements, which until now could enter prison establishments.
