Brazil and US to Continue Negotiations on Tariff Measures

cbn31 August 2026 at 21:07

Brazil and the United States agreed to continue negotiations on the tariffs imposed on Brazilian products and hold new technical meetings in the coming weeks. The first meeting after the new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Brazil took place this Monday. The meeting involved US sectors responsible for international trade affairs, as well as Brazil's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Services and the Itamaraty.

It was agreed that new meetings will be scheduled to continue the discussions. The meetings should take place virtually, although in-person meetings are possible. This time, the negotiations will be conducted by technical areas, focusing on negotiating the specific points of Section 301 of the US Trade Act, which is the legal provision used to impose the rates on Brazilian products exported to the United States.

Brazil has also initiated the process under the Economic Reciprocity Law as part of its response strategy to American tariffs. This law establishes mechanisms for the country to adopt reciprocal measures against trade practices deemed unfair by other countries.

Channel crossings by migrants in small boats have never been so few since 2019

The UK recorded this summer the lowest number of migrant crossings in small boats across the English Channel since 2019, with the British government celebrating the success of the cooperation agreement with France. The total number of migrants who crossed the English Channel between June and August fell to the lowest level in seven years, at a time when weather conditions and increased political tensions in France may have contributed to the reduction. The bilateral agreement, which includes greater French surveillance on the northern French beaches and information sharing, has been pointed out as a determining factor in the decrease of these dangerous crossings.
