The president of the Municipal Council of Estremoz, José Daniel Sádio, used the celebrations of the 100 years of Estremoz's elevation to city to take stock of the municipality's transformation over a century and present the priorities for the coming years. The ceremony was chaired by the minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida.
Among the main priorities identified by the mayor are housing, water supply, heritage and historic centre recovery, urban development, and investment in education and health. José Daniel Sádio argued that the capacity to maintain and attract population is directly associated with the existence of conditions for young people to remain in the municipality.
The president of the Council recalled the journey since 1926, when Estremoz went from town to city, associating an important part of this transformation with the path opened after the April Revolution. José Daniel Sádio also paid tribute to José Lourenço Marques Crespo, who led the municipality at the time of elevation to city, considering him "one of the great architects" of that moment.
The mayor also projected the challenges of climate change and energy crises for the next 100 years, arguing that it is necessary to prepare Estremoz for a different reality. "May the next 100 years come, for the future belongs to all Estremocenses," he stated.
