TAP entered a "new chapter" in its history, according to the airline itself, at a time marked by significant financial difficulties. The company recorded a loss of almost 100 million euros in the first half, a result that comes in a particularly challenging context for the aviation sector.
The main factor that contributed to this negative result was the sharp rise in the cost of jet fuel, aviation fuel. This increase in costs strongly pressured the airline's accounts, threatening to further compromise its financial results.
TAP tried to mitigate these effects through a "hedging" strategy, that is, currency and fuel price risk coverage. However, this bet couldn't completely avoid the negative impact on the company's accounts, having only softened part of the effects of the fuel price rise.
These results were announced in the middle of TAP's privatization process, at a particularly sensitive moment for the company's future. Luís Rodrigues, a prominent figure in the airline's management, came out in defense of the figures presented, seeking to contextualize the negative results given the circumstantial challenges that affected the sector.
