New Glória Elevator to Have Opening Scheduled for 2029

Diário de Leiria31 August 2026 at 20:00

The new Glória elevator will have an opening forecast for 2029. The project is under development and promises to bring back this important means of transport in the city.

Rui Lopo was one of the voices that commented on the project, stating that it is not a reconstruction of the previous transport system. In other words, it is a new project, not just a repair of what existed.

The previous Glória elevator derailed in 2025, which led to the need to think of a solution to replace this important means of transport. The accident prompted the authorities to plan a new structure.

With the 2029 forecast for the completion of the works, users of this transport will have to wait a few more years until they can use the Glória elevator again, which will be a completely new system and not a reconstruction of the previous one.
