Hungary: Magyar says EU has to decide if it wants to "survive or win" and criticizes lack of leadership

Euronews Portugal31 August 2026 at 19:53

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, stated at the Bled Strategic Forum that the European Union faces a leadership crisis and needs to make crucial decisions about its future. Magyar warned that the European bloc has to decide if it wants to "survive or win", in a message that emphasized the urgency of profound changes in how the EU is governed.

The Hungarian leader harshly criticized the current lack of leadership in the European Union, suggesting that European institutions are not adequately responding to the challenges facing the continent. These statements come at a time of tension between Budapest and European institutions.

Magyar also considered that the daily fines imposed by Brussels on Hungary in the context of migration are unfair. Hungary has frequently been targeted by infringement proceedings by the European Commission, particularly related to migration and asylum policies.
