Sunotec is moving forward with the construction of a 100 MW / 441 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, which will rank among the largest in Germany when it becomes operational, expected in the first quarter of 2027. The project reached "ready to build" status in the second quarter of 2026 and is being implemented by the company as a "turnkey" supplier, integrating engineering, installation, and long-term operation and maintenance capabilities.
The official launch of the project was marked on August 27 at a ceremony attended by 65 guests, including the State Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection, and Environment of Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Wünsch, the Mayor of Stendal, Bastian Sieler, and representatives of grid operator Avacon and WT Energiesysteme. WT Energiesysteme is building a new 110 kV substation on site to connect the battery system to the electrical grid.
The initiative represents a significant step in Sunotec's expansion of energy storage activities in Europe, after the company installed 6.1 GWh of BESS capacity across the continent. The Stendal system was designed to store electricity when supply is high and release it when needed, providing flexibility to the electrical system and supporting renewable energy integration.
The project falls under the joint venture SECURSUN, between Sunotec and securenergy, combining the company's expertise in engineering and delivering large-scale renewable energy and storage infrastructure. "For Sunotec, Stendal is just the beginning," said Sunotec's CEO, Bernhard Suchland.
