A storm hit Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night (29th), bringing hail to Recreio dos Bandeirantes and stretches of Barra da Tijuca, in the Southwest Zone of the city. The phenomenon caught the attention of residents and was recorded in videos shared on social media, showing the intensity of the ice that fell on the neighborhoods.
According to meteorologists heard by GLOBO, a combination of factors favored the formation of ice stones during the storm. The experts explained that there may be new similar hail occurrences, since the meteorological conditions that favor the phenomenon can repeat.
In videos posted on social media, residents showed the force of the hail that hit Recreio dos Bandeirantes and complained about the absence of alerts from the municipal Civil Defense. However, the agency stated that it sent alerts about rain showers and strong wind on Saturday night, information corroborated by some commenters in the posts themselves.
