Met Gala 2027 at Risk? Exhibition Dedicated to John Galliano Cancelled After Wave of Criticism

SIC Notícias31 August 2026 at 18:08

The Metropolitan Museum of Art decided to cancel the Costume Institute's spring exhibition that was to be dedicated to designer John Galliano, initially planned to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala. The show was officially withdrawn from the museum's program.

The decision to cancel the exhibition arose after an intense wave of criticism directed at the museum. Many questioned the choice to dedicate such an important exhibition to Galliano, considering the British designer's controversial history.

John Galliano was convicted for racist and anti-Semitic remarks he made publicly. These remarks caused great controversy and significantly damaged his reputation in the international fashion industry.

With the cancellation of the exhibition, the future of the 2027 Met Gala is now in doubt, since traditionally the gala serves as a fundraising event for the opening of the Costume Institute's exhibition. The museum has not yet announced whether the gala will take place or if any modifications to the original plans will be necessary.

The chuvisco, a traditional sweet from Campos dos Goytacazes in Rio de Janeiro, remains a trademark of the city even after passing fads such as the "strawberry fever of love" and mixtures with ninho and nutella have lost momentum. Considered intangible and cultural heritage of the city since 2011, the sweet also won the Award for Gastronomic Wonders of the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2014, in the category "Sweets and Jams". Despite its strong connection to Campos, the delicacy has Portuguese origins. The confectioner Dayse Souza Cruz, 64 years old, has been working with chuviscos for 36 years and reports that there is demand throughout the year, being so requested that she had difficulty interrupting her orders to grant an interview.

Once upon a time… culture

The article reflects on the evolution of the concept of "culture" over time. If in the past the word evoked heritage, knowledge, arts, traditions, critical thinking and identity, today it seems to be used to designate almost everything, from events, entertainment, leisure and festivals to any activity with a public dimension. The author observes that this concept has been progressively broadened to encompass very different realities among themselves.
