A fire broke out on Wednesday in a maternity ward of a hospital in the capital of Pakistan, causing the death of 14 babies. The fire spread through the unit "in approximately two minutes," shortly after 06:30, according to a preliminary report prepared by a commission created by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Nurse Razia Noreen managed to save only one of the 15 babies who were under the care of the hospital. In statements to the press, the health professional said: "Those babies don't let me sleep," revealing the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the suspension of eight officials responsible for the hospital and called for criminal proceedings to be opened related to the incident. An investigation commission was created to determine the circumstances of the disaster.
The images from the hospital's surveillance cameras were analyzed, with a 51-second excerpt documenting the critical moments of the fire in the maternity ward.
