Lisbon Stock Exchange records best month since the start of the war in Iran

Eco31 August 2026 at 16:42

The national stock exchange recorded in August the best month since the start of the conflict between the USA and Iran, in February. The PSI advanced more than 3.45%, which represents the best monthly performance since February, when it jumped more than 7%. In Monday's session, the index closed with a very slight gain of 0.07% to 9,437.18 points, but the month overall was very positive.

On February 28, the USA and Israel initiated attacks against the Iranian regime. Six months later, the conflict has entered a new phase with Washington announcing Operation Economic Pariah, with the goal of economically isolating Tehran. Despite this uncertainty, Lisbon was one of the European markets that gained the most value.

In the European context, the German DAX added more than 2% and the Spanish IBEX 35 gained just over 1%. The Paris CAC 40, however, lost almost 2% during the month.

August was particularly positive for Lisbon's heavyweights, with Galp, BCP and EDP climbing more than 5%. Jerónimo Martins added 3.5% and EDP Renováveis advanced 2.8%. The best performances belonged to Ibersol and CTT, with gains exceeding 7% and 8%, respectively. Only three stocks had a negative month: Teixeira Duarte, Sonae and Altri.

European Union suspends imports of Brazilian meat starting Thursday

The European Union announced that it will suspend starting Thursday the imports of beef, poultry meat, eggs, and honey from Brazil. The European Commission justifies the measure due to insufficient guarantees from Brazil regarding compliance with European standards against the abusive use of antibiotics in livestock. The spokesperson for the European Executive stated that Brazil is an important partner of the EU and that they are working constructively with Brazilian authorities to ensure compliance with the requirements, allowing the resumption of exports after such compliance is demonstrated. Brussels did not provide a timeline for the normalization of imports.
