The coalition of candidate Eduardo Paes (PSD), who leads the electoral polls in Rio de Janeiro, went back to court two days after the Superior Electoral Court granted an injunction allowing Anthony Garotinho (Republicanos) to resume his campaign activities. The new request aims to block Garotinho's access to the electoral fund and television campaign time.
Paes's coalition highlights in its filing the previous decision by the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro that was favorable to the restrictions imposed on Garotinho. The lawyers argue that since Garotinho's candidacy is considered "unviable," blocking access would preserve public resources that would be used in the campaign.
The filing also emphasizes that the very morality of the electoral process and the informed formation of the voters' will are at stake. The coalition maintains that it would be inexplicable to Rio de Janeiro voters that the Electoral Court would allow the use of public money and space in the media by someone whose political rights have been suspended by a final court decision.
