Guineans approve new Constitution, CNT assures

Guineans approved the country's new Constitution, according to information from the CNT. The provisional results of the referendum held on Sunday will be announced on Tuesday. The opposition had called for a boycott of the vote and denounces high abstention among voters. The process of approving the new fundamental law took place in a context of political division in the country.

90 years ago, on August 28, 1936, President Getúlio Vargas signed a decree ordering the deportation of Olga Benário Prestes, a German activist from a Jewish family and wife of communist leader Luiz Carlos Prestes, to Nazi Germany. Olga had been arrested months earlier, in March, during a police operation with more than 90 agents, in a building in the Cachambi neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Despite being pregnant with Prestes' child and being his legitimate wife, nothing prevented Vargas's decision, who was aware of the situation of Jews in Germany, where the Nuremberg Laws, enacted in 1935, had already stripped this population of various rights.
