Trump begins to admit scenario of leaving the White House in 2029

United States President Donald Trump has begun making increasingly explicit references to leaving the White House in January 2029, although he continues to entertain the possibility of a third term and leaves open a potential candidacy in 2028. In recent speeches, Trump has described how he imagines life after the presidency, including scenarios where he watches on television as his successor claims the results of his administration's policies. "Your next President is going to say: 'What an excellent job I did,'" Trump stated at an event in Long Island, New York.

Trump has been sending contradictory signals about his political future. In Pennsylvania, he again imagined this scenario, stating that the next President could claim as their own the results achieved by the current administration. "Whoever the next President is, is going to talk about the brilliant President that came before. And I will be at home," he added. A week later, in Georgia, he anticipated he would be "sitting at home" and admitted: "Maybe I will be crying." However, in Michigan, he reintroduced ambiguity, saying that "in two and a half years from now, you may have a different President — you may," placing particular emphasis on the possibility.

The 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1951, establishes that no person may be elected President more than twice. Trump has previously stated that there would be "methods" that would allow him to attempt to return to the presidency, including the possibility of running as a vice presidential candidate alongside JD Vance in 2028 and subsequently assuming the presidency should Vance resign. He has also spoken about the existence of "constitutional loopholes," although he subsequently acknowledged that the restrictions are difficult to overcome.

The statements represent a shift in tone for a President who, since the beginning of his second term, has repeatedly suggested that he may seek ways to remain in power beyond the eight years allowed by the Constitution. The White House rejected the idea that Trump is already focused on the end of his presidency or the legacy he will leave, stating through spokesperson Olivia Wales that "the only legacy President Trump is concerned with is making America greater than ever." The approach of midterm elections, scheduled for nine weeks from now, places Trump in a phase where Presidents in their second term traditionally begin to face the risk of loss of political influence.

The decree by Getúlio Vargas that handed Olga Prestes over to Adolf Hitler, 90 years ago

90 years ago, on August 28, 1936, President Getúlio Vargas signed a decree ordering the deportation of Olga Benário Prestes, a German activist from a Jewish family and wife of communist leader Luiz Carlos Prestes, to Nazi Germany. Olga had been arrested months earlier, in March, during a police operation with more than 90 agents, in a building in the Cachambi neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Despite being pregnant with Prestes' child and being his legitimate wife, nothing prevented Vargas's decision, who was aware of the situation of Jews in Germany, where the Nuremberg Laws, enacted in 1935, had already stripped this population of various rights.
