"Polyester": the new code used by Generation Z to denounce influencers, brands and lives that are too perfect

SAPO Notícias31 August 2026 at 15:30

The word "Polyester" has become a new code used by Generation Z on social media to denounce influencers, brands and people who present lives that are too perfect and inauthentic. The term, which literally means polyester in English, works as an insult that exposes the artificiality of certain online content.

This expression recently went viral on social media, especially among younger people, who use it to criticize profiles that promote an overly curated and unrealistic lifestyle. The choice of the term polyester is not accidental, since the fabric is known for being synthetic and artificial, contrasting with natural materials.

The phenomenon emerges in the context of a growing dissatisfaction of young people with social media culture, where many influencers are frequently accused of promoting a false image of reality. Generation Z increasingly demonstrates interest in authenticity and transparency in the content they consume.

This type of ephemeral vocabulary, which is born, goes viral and disappears quickly on social media, reflects the way younger people communicate their criticisms of the influencer industry and the brands that perpetuate unrealistic standards of living.
